NPFL Table 2026: Final Standings, Enugu Rangers Champions, Top Scorers & Full Season Review

I have followed the NPFL for over a decade, and I will say it straight: the 2025/26 season was the most dramatic final day Nigerian domestic football has produced in recent memory. Two championship trophies dispatched to two cities — one to Enugu, one to Port Harcourt — because nobody knew where the celebration would happen when the Sunday morning sun came up. Two heavyweight coaches facing off for a title separated by one point. Defending champions Remo Stars clinging to top-flight survival with their fingernails. Enyimba — eight-time league champions — doing the same. A Golden Boot race where four strikers were tied going into the final 90 minutes. And then, at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, captain Chidiebere Nwobodo scored twice to write his name into Nigerian football history. The NPFL table 2026 tells a story worth telling properly. Here it is, in full.

Joseph Arumala of Ikorodu City claimed the Golden Boot with 14 goals — one more than Rangers captain Godwin Obaje, who scored 13 including his final-day contribution in Lagos. Victor Mbaoma\’s 12 goals kept Remo Stars alive. Jonathan Mairiga of relegated Wikki Tourists scored 11 times in a losing cause — one of the season\’s individual bright spots in an otherwise painful campaign for the Bauchi club.

The Title Story: How Enugu Rangers Won It in Lagos

The 2025/26 NPFL title race was settled at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos — not in Enugu, not in Port Harcourt. That detail alone captures how unusual this season was. Enugu Rangers, needing a win to be certain of the championship regardless of what happened elsewhere, travelled to a Lagos ground hosting a game that Ikorodu City desperately needed to win for a continental qualification spot. Both sides had genuine reasons to want the three points. The atmosphere was electric from the first whistle.

Captain Chidiebere Nwobodo delivered when it mattered most. His first goal arrived in the 30th minute — a powerful strike that gave Rangers the lead they needed. He doubled the advantage shortly after the restart, going 2-0 up and leaving Lagos stunned. Ikorodu City\’s Moses Ali pulled one back to set up a nervy ending, but Rangers held on under extraordinary pressure — thousands of travelling Enugu supporters who, according to Pulse Sports Nigeria, had turned the Onikan Stadium red and white making the atmosphere feel like a home ground for the visitors.

Meanwhile in Port Harcourt, Rivers United did everything in their power. They beat Katsina United 3-0. They scored the goals. They won the match. They played their part. But there was no slip-up in Lagos. Enugu Rangers were champions — their ninth NPFL title, drawing level with Enyimba as the most decorated club in Nigerian top-flight history. Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu, who won a previous title with Rangers in 2023/24, sprinted onto the pitch at full-time to celebrate — a sight that will live long in Nigerian football memory. E don set.

This was only the second time in NPFL history that the title was decided by a single point on the final day of a 38-matchday season. The drama was total. Two trophies, two cities, one winner.

Relegation: The Biggest Shocks of the Season

Three clubs are confirmed relegated from the 2025/26 NPFL: Wikki Tourists (40 pts), Kun Khalifat (38 pts), and Kwara United (30 pts). All three return to the Nigeria National League. But the real relegation story is who came agonisingly close to joining them.

Remo Stars: Defending Champions, Almost Relegated

This is the most remarkable sporting storyline from the 2025/26 NPFL season. Remo Stars — the 2024/25 champions, the team that lifted the trophy just twelve months earlier — entered the final day in a relegation dogfight. They needed results to go their way. In the end, they survived, finishing 12th with 47 points — but only after a final day that had the Ikenne club sweating through every minute. Coach Kennedy Boboye is expected to undertake a significant squad rebuild during the off-season. As Daily Trust noted, the failure to defend the title and the near-relegation experience makes Remo Stars one of the big losers of the 2025/26 season regardless of their technical survival.

Enyimba: Eight-Time Champions Near the Drop

Eight NPFL titles. Two CAF Champions League trophies. Continental legends. And in May 2026, Enyimba FC were fighting relegation. The People\’s Elephant survived — finishing 14th with 46 points — but the fact it came to this represents a low point in the Aba club\’s modern history. Recruitment failures, an ageing squad in key positions, and a difficult run of results from December onwards all contributed. A full review and rebuild is expected before the 2026/27 season begins.

Ikorodu City (3rd place), Shooting Stars (4th place)

Enugu Rangers and Rivers United will represent Nigeria in the CAF Champions League — the continent\’s most prestigious club competition. Both clubs faced each other in the most intense domestic title race in recent Nigerian history; now they will carry Nigerian football\’s flag to the rest of Africa. For Rangers, the Champions League campaign is also a chance to match Enyimba\’s continental records, which include two CAF CL titles (2003, 2004).

Ikorodu City\’s third-place finish is a genuine achievement for a club still establishing themselves in the top flight. Their qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup is reward for one of the most impressive second-season campaigns by a recently promoted Nigerian club. Shooting Stars — the Oluyole Warriors — also earn a Confederation Cup berth, giving Ibadan continental football for the first time in several seasons.

The NPFL and the Super Eagles: The Bigger Picture

The NPFL table does not exist in isolation. The clubs, players, and results from Nigeria\’s domestic season feed directly into the Super Eagles\’ national team picture. Several NPFL players were part of Coach Eric Chelle\’s extended Super Eagles squad considerations during the 2025/26 season, and the September 2026 AFCON qualification window — when Nigeria host Madagascar in their opening Group L game — will include NPFL-based players competing for call-ups alongside the overseas-based contingent.

How to Use the NPFL Table for Betting

The final NPFL table is more than a historical record — for Nigerian bettors, it is foundational research material for the 2026/27 season. Here is how experienced bettors use end-of-season standing data to build early-season edges.

Newly relegated clubs replaced by promoted sides create predictable quality gaps in the opening matchdays of the new season. Promoted clubs from the NNL typically struggle in their first six matchdays against established NPFL sides — historically a strong market for backing away wins when promoted sides host strong mid-table NPFL clubs. Our over 2.5 goals NPFL guide and BTTS strategy guide will incorporate these patterns into early 2026/27 season predictions.

CAF-competing clubs — Rangers, Rivers, Ikorodu, Shooting Stars — will have compressed schedules in the 2026/27 season. When building accumulators that include these clubs, always check whether they have a CAF game within the previous or following 72 hours. Squad rotation and fatigue from continental fixtures is one of the most reliable under-the-radar edges in NPFL betting. Our 3-fold accumulator guide and NPFL accumulator tips page will cover this throughout the new season.

Clubs that narrowly survived — Remo Stars and Enyimba — will be under enormous pressure to perform from the opening day of 2026/27. That pressure creates specific betting dynamics: home fans who expect dominance, squads that may be rebuilt but not yet settled, and coaching staff under increased scrutiny. These are environments where early-season away wins against \”bigger\” clubs are more common than the pre-match odds suggest. Use our Naira betting calculator to assess whether the implied probability in those odds represents genuine value.

What to Expect in NPFL 2026/27

Three clubs from the 2025/26 Nigeria National League will be promoted for the 2026/27 NPFL season, replacing Wikki Tourists, Kun Khalifat, and Kwara United. Based on the NNL 2025/26 standings, Akwa United — the former NPFL club who were relegated and have been dominant in the NNL this season — are among the clubs expected to return to the top flight. Their return, if confirmed, would be one of the storylines of the 2026/27 opening rounds.

The new season is expected to begin in August 2026. Key storylines going in: Can Rangers defend the title with CAF competition added to their schedule? Can Rivers United go one further after two consecutive near-misses? Will Remo Stars rebuild credibly or struggle again? And which promoted clubs will surprise the division the way Ikorodu City did in 2024/25?
